National Dog Day Celebrated at Two Homes

Alexandra and Melbourne House both welcomed pets to mark this annual occasion because they know their residents enjoy these specail visitors.

National Dog Day is celebrated on August 26th across the country and was founded in 2004 by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate, to give recognition to 'mans best friend'

Resident Joyce  enjoys petting visitor Benson, he is so well behaved and becomes star of the visitors at Alexandra House.

Terriers are real working dogs, but also make excellent pets. Melbourne house has pet day inviting Terriers and other animals..........This terrier certainly holds the interest and other animals join in Dog Day at Melbourne

,

Handler and dog owner Angie explains to Sheila what the dog training involves - many hours and patience. Benson sits quietly at their feet (Sheila is studying him)

Polly the parrot generates interest and is a big talking point here .at Melbourne House...............

Mick enjoys taking charge of Benson as his daughter visits. Animals provide an extra diminesion for visitors and it is great for residents to be able to interact .

The cockatoo sits proudly with our brave resident!

National Dog Day celebrates all dogs, mixed breed and pure with a mission to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort. Dogs put their lives on the line every day.

We are pleased to be able to share this National Event with our residents and visitors.

Activities Galore at Alexandra House - Eastwood

A 'raft' of activities have been taking place this summer; choirs, gardening, quizes and heritage, a great cross section.........here is a snapshot for you;

The bright community choir thrilled our residents with their beautiful singing, creating 'goosebumps' with their super rendition of 'I dreamed a dream.  They also sang some traditional songs. 'There is nothing like some live music to evoke memories, bring joy and be uplifting' said a visitor to the home. Many thanks to the choir for visiting and we look forward to them coming back later in the year. Activities Co-ordinator, Debra Bonser gets everyone active physically and mentally with her great new ball quiz, whilst enjoying the summer weather and the garden at Alexandra House. Its very popular and looks like becoming a weekly feature............until the autumn. Afternoon Tea in the garden is popular, a great spot to bring visitors and enjoy the sound of the little fountain, but also to view their plants grown earlier in the year. It is good that residents can persue their garden hobbies if they wish, Derek, June, Elsie, Joan and Mike especially like the gardening, while Eleanor likes to sit in the shade and watch.
Heritage and history from Brian Keys, of the Heanor Heritage Society, as he enthralls the residents with his local knowledge.

Participating in National events is encouraged and Wimbledon week is a cause for celebration and decoration and a bit of competition with 'guess the number of balls' accompanied by Pimms.............

 That might be why the ladies got involved in fruit  salad and some strawberries and cream too....

It is great to be able to particiapate and a group of the ladies enjoyed making summer fruit salad. Pictured resident Sheila enjoying being involved dicing ..............

Baking was also on the agenda for the interhome chocolate cake bake

EASTGATE CARE BAKE OFF - Inter-home Challenge

IN CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL CHOCOLATE DAY, a splendid array of chocolate cake delights were produced;

Eastgate Care hosted an inter-home bake off in celebration of the International Chocolate Day on the 7th July 2016. Operations Director, Sharon Di Maio was joined by Linda Britain, Operations Manager, Marie Duke-Parker, Care Home Manager and Michael Wraight, Director of Pro Power, to judge the array of cakes and cupcakes each team had baked. Every home was awarded a prize for the ‘best taste’ cake and also the best cake for appearance. Park House Care Home won the prize for their effort overall.

Operations Director, Sharon Di Maio stated,

”All of the judges were impressed with the standard of cakes produced. We saw cakes that had been baked by our staff, our residents and our relatives within each home. All the homes took part with some staff donning fancy dress and arranging an array of activities throughout the day. The atmosphere was great, the residents were fully involved and we all had a fantastic time, with lots of cake sampling!

We were pleased to have supplier Michael Wraight, of Pro Power (pictured below), join us for the days events as one of our judges.''

It was really good to see staff and residents enjoying the event together, along with our guests.

Resident Brian Sadler enjoying the produce.

Over 75 people across five Eastgate homes took part. One relative at Belle Vue thought it was a tremendous idea, she really enjoyed the cake and thought it was brilliant that our residents were so involved in the actual cake baking.

Cake making in action, with Activities Leader, Andrew  - residents get 'stuck in' to the mixing,  they love to bake at Park House, Bulwell and won the overall Care Home Bake prize.

'' We like to use local contractors and suppliers and feel it is very important for us to work with local communities and businesses. Overall, it was a great day for everyone and we are looking forward to planning our next inter - home competition”

Operations Manager Linda Britain and Care Home Manager Marie Duke-Parker partake of some chocolatey delights.

Staff at Canal Vue dress up for this occasion, they had a Willy Wonka themed bake. Pictured at the Inter-home prize giving.

Look out for our next inter-home event in August.

Weather Forces National Care Home Open Days Indoors

Everyone is wondering when the summer will arrive, but planned summer activities for National Care Home Day continued despite the awful weather! Both Alexandra House at Eastwood and Melbourne House at Aspley were blighted by the weather and had to move planned entertainment indoors;

As always a good spread of food was available for the residents at Alex House on their open day.

Tombola, raffle and some stalls complimented the entertainment, residents like doing a bit of 'home shopping' at their Eastwood residence

Resident Monica at Melbourne House enjoys the music, participates and concentrates on playing the tambourine.

Staff enjoy a bit of party time - sharing - as well.
