Great Gardening with 80 Year Old at; Melbourne House Care Home, Nottingham

82 year old resident at Melbourne House, Dennis has no time to sit around, he loves to be ‘on the go’ and getting out in the garden planting is one of his favourites. Dennis has planted bulbs, which are blooming now and he is planning ahead and growing cabbage, lettuce and onions from seed. Should you visit Melbourne House, just off Aspley Lane, you will notice the entrance area is part greenhouse too!  It is hoped that the produce will eventually be used by the Chef at Melbourne, who likes to cook with fresh produce being an avid grower herself.

Dennis shows how to Ice

Dennis, originally from Hyson Green is very much a multi-skilled octogenarian, and although his background is engineering, he is a competent cake maker and icer, having been in the catering corps. Dennis is pictured creating delicacies during an activities baking session and helping other residents with their baking.
Dennis’s next gardening project is to grow different potato varieties and with the help of local volunteers that will soon get underway. Sometimes ex-police controller Roy joins Dennis in the garden, although Roy likes to have quiet time reading, he also likes to get outside in his wheelchair and do some directional instructions, called Super- pointing!

Residents Active at Wi FIT - Alex House

Not All Teenagers are Scary!

Young sports volunteers in Eastwood (Notts) donated their time and enthusiasm to introduce new technology to older members of the community at Alexandra House Care Home. The group proved that they are far from the scary teenagers that we read about and showed that they can assist individuals with less mobility to enjoy sport, by showing how to use and interact with a range of games on the Wii fit.

The six Broxtowe volunteers shared their enthusiasm for sport and their appreciation of how sport can provide a stimulus, not only for movement but for social interaction and fun!

The students are all studying some element of sport in addition to their voluntary work. The group leader Julie Cole said ‘We had an amazing and rewarding time at Alexandra House, the teenagers were able to effectively explain how to play the games and they communicated well, we all look forward to revisiting in the Spring’

The Alexandra House residents learnt how to play skittles and  bowls on the Wii Fit, which has been donated to the Care Home  by Broxtowe Sport Volunteers. The sports, many of them had not been able to participate in for a long time, encouraged movement, competition and laughter.

The activity sessions now occur on weekly basis and bowls is a resounding success with the residents, Aida and Sandria are the top ‘gamers’.  They are about to learn the Countdown game and it is all very exciting for people who had never used computer equipment before.

Activities Co-ordinator Lorraine is amazed at how popular and stimulating these games are and how it has helped some of the quieter residents become more active in group situations. We are all ‘pleased that the Broxtowe Sports Volunteers visited us and it was great to see the young people mixing with our residents’
