Sculpt with us for Our Big Draw - In Lines

The Big Draw is the world’s biggest celebration of drawing. It has grown into a month-long festival running throughout October in all parts of the UK. Every year more organisers across the world join the Big Draw family and run drawing events to engage their communities in creative activities.

This year's theme is 'In Lines'

We at all our Care Homes are entering the Big Draw Contest - it is a national art activity that all our Homes and Activity Co-ordinators can participate in and ‘enjoy’

Our Big Draw will be wire based – using cost effective telephone wire which is light and easy to use for ‘all’ , however due to a ‘run’ on this product we now have to have wire shipped in from New York!

The wire can be moulded into individual sculptures, which will then be launched by helium balloon or made into garden sculptures at Alexandra House.

It is an inclusive activity, so that we can encourage our residents, relatives, friends & families, staff, adult services, doctors, Councillors………………………………. everyone who comes in the care home!

Come and join us at one of our Care Homes for our Big Draw – The challenge is to get the most participants for a Care Home setting.

Artist Award for Alexandra House

An emphasis on art and what can be achieved for Care Home residents ensured that Eastgate’s Home at Eastwood Nottingham, was awarded the Artist in Residence programme from Nottingham City Arts. Eastgates commitment to Art in the Care Homes was exhibited by involvement in the recent activities Art in Care training, personnel and management staff becoming thoroughly engaged with the art process and committing to participation in the National Big Draw Event.

Following an enlightening day of creativity at Nottingham’s Rufford Abbey Activities Coordinator Charise Mullins said ‘This is something we can share with our residents and staff - art is second nature for some, but the artist award will help involve all. Nine art works in 90 minutes certainly gave ‘us’ something to take home from Rufford!’

City Arts in conjunction with Nottingham County Council decided to explore creative approaches to enhancing the wellbeing of older people in residential care in Nottinghamshire, by appointing an Artist in Residence at a suitable Care Home – Alexandra House. An additional part of the project is to report and disseminate the development of this work across the County. The project is likely to commence in November when ‘the artist in residence’ takes up the position.

‘To have an artist work with us and our residents is of great significance for our Activities personnel, residents and families –to explore together how creative ideas can enhance the care environment will be a special experience. We will make the most of this by sharing it across our four Care Homes’. Sue Young – HR. Manager Eastgate Care

Helping Out with Alzheimers - Walking for the Mind

Staff from Eastgates Head Office and Alexandra House participated in the recent Alzheimers charity walk, raised a hoard of sponsorship money and appeared, albeit fleetingly, on Central TV.

This ten mile walk, which started at Victoria embankment went via Beeston Marina back to Victoria embankment.

'It was well attended and friendly with good humour despite the infernal drizzle' said one participant!

Participants from Eastgate were:

Pictured Maxine Thornley, Marie Duke Parker,  Sue Young, Zoe Taylor, Marie Martin and Sally Anne Booth.

Paula Butler also from Eastgate's Park House, actually participated for a 2nd year with a group of friends.

Our staff are just about 'back to normal' and able to walk unblistered now!

Well done to all with the fund raising and walking.

Alexandra Fayre - Finale to an event-filled season

Following a busy summer at Alexandra House, they managed to fit in one final event of the season and made the most of the last bit of summer sun to stage their fayre at Eastwood.

A marquee erected – to provide shelter and ‘just in case the summer weather did its ‘usual’ however  we were incredibly lucky with the weather and it was a beautiful warm day. This enabled the residents to be outside with their families, which made a welcome change for them adding to their pleasure.

A range of activities and a great entertainer – Frankie Fortune – got everyone outdoors, friends, family and staff revelled in the event.

The highlight pictured below artist- 'Frankie Fortune' - a professional entertainer. He provided lots to watch with an act consisting of Music, Magic, Puppets, Percy the Parrot and Grandad, Memory games, jokes and plenty of old songs.

We were incredibly lucky with the weather.and this enabled the residents to be outside with their families which made a great change for them, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

The BBQ went down well also. Burgers and Hotdogs were sold and hardly anyone was indoors.

‘A great event for all to share’ said our visitors.

Activities Coordinators,

Kaere and Lorraine join in the fun and enjoy the weather

We raised a total of £316 for the Residents Fund and would like to thank all who contributed to this worthwhile event and the enjoyment it created.

Belle Vue Lodge First Year Anniversary Party - A Big Hit

Residents, staff their friends & families, gathered for a celebratory 'get together' tea - with a huge cake, big buffet & lots of home-made baking, all accessible so that everyone could participate.

Activity Co-ordinator Becky made the event a musical delight, with her 'voice of an angel' singing a whole range of songs -tunes  that our residents could recall and sing along too, really lifting the spirits.

It was so uplifting that it made you want to dance! & dance they did.

Pictured left Becky serenading, adjacent to the tombola,

which staff organised, boosting the relatives fund by £120.

Barbara, pictured above right with her walking frame said 'we can do that dancing lark' and moved her hips so well, both with and without her walker, in time to the music...then felt hungry and enjoyed a large jam and cream scone!

Another Belle Vue resident, despite having eaten a big tea, following on from all the activity was able to manage another slice of pizza (or two)

'It was truly amazing how many residents remembered the words to the old tunes & great to see the young and old ‘partying’ together'

The fine weather enabled visiting children to paddle in the water feature and play skittles in the sun, as residents watched with delight. Almost everyone joined in the fun and the glass reception room was packed with music and laughter.

During the party we were visited by representatives of our chosen local charity - Nottingham Royal Society for the Blind. Sue Ridout, who manages the local outlet in Mapperley took receipt of a cheque (on behalf of the society) from Belle Vue Care Home Manager, Sue Clifford.

Full House at Alexandra House

Alexandra House at Eastwood reached record capacity for 2011, when in September only 1 room remained vacant for a short while!

Staff at the home are one of the top assets, with their friendly ways and caring attitude along with

strong ties to the local community and local health services.

This was borne out by the recent response to the Alexandra House Summer Fayre when the local residents joined in the festivities

with the Care Home residents.
