Scarey Time enjoyed by Alexandra House Residents

Events took a funny turn when staff at Alex combined the horrors of Halloween with the sparkles of fireworks and the festivity of food.
Relatives, friends and Staff  together with  residents enjoyed party food games and Costume competitions. Some great fund raising took place with the Tombola stall, netting £140 for the residents fund.
The  residents enjoyed dressing up and taking part in the whole event.
Hayley really is the star of the show with this super Pumpkin cake and a  fabulous smile to accompany it.
‘Friends and family were invited and all from age 9-90 plus joined in. With Apple Bobbing and a childrens fancy dress  too it was a hectic fun schedule’ said Marie.

The Three Witches of Eastgate — Lorraine, Gill and Rose, staff at Alex House dress the part and entertain the residents with their costumes. ) Not to be outdone, Ivy Booth (resident)  put up strong competition, complete with black cat.

Alexandra House Brave the Elements for Summer Fayre

Alexandra House staff and residents braved the varied weather conditions to stage the summer fayre this August. The Mayor of Eastwood opened proceedings and when the weather got ‘tough’ attendees were able to  shelter in the marquee.

All enjoyed the variety of stalls and entertainment - not forgetting the food and fire engine - helping to raise over £400.00s for the residents fund.

Our Thanks at Eastgate Care go to all participants, staff, stall holders and attendees for supporting this venture.

Greenhouse Sparks Residents Gardening Club at Alex House

A nearby local resident had the foresight to donate a small portable greenhouse and with the enthusiasm and inventiveness of Activities Coordinator Loraine Rose, the Gardening Club was set up earlier this year.

Some Alex House residents already had an interest in gardening and were keen to have an outlet for their knowledge.

Ten residents participate in the group and between them they have managed to grow a whole range of vegetables; tomatoes, green beans, courgettes - many from seed.   Lettuces have already been enjoyed and the ‘home grown’ potatoes are nearly ready for the table. Colour is added with a variety of pot plants, tubs and hanging baskets with some plants being donated.

Care Home owner and MD Mr Day said ‘Our residents are benefitting from this activity and they are able to take part in a hobby which they truly enjoy, they can benefit from being outdoors and to be able to produce something is a real plus. We hope this project will continue for many years to come’.

The dedication of the Alex House Care workers enabled this venture to ‘get off the ground’ because in addition to Lorraine’s organising skills, further help was needed for daily watering and the loan of garden tools. Sheila Fletcher deserves a special mention, she has brought  special gardening knowledge and commitment to this project.

Donations of unwanted plants and garden tools can always find a Home at Alex House Gardening club!

Melbourne Mingle

A glorious June afternoon bathed in sunshine - saw residents, relatives, staff and local Bulwell people  gathered to enjoy this summer fair. A whole range of stalls were laid out and bunting adorned the Care Home as participants enjoyed buying and consuming goods! Bric a Brac, Teddy Stall and Henna Hand Painting went down a treat. The Italian Ice Cream stall was doing a rip roaring trade as people relaxed and enjoyed a typical Saturday afternoon in Aspley!

Local residents have the opportunity to join ‘us’ for coffee and cakes on a Thursday morning, to meet the residents and staff at Melbourne House. We were joined in June, by 6 ‘locals’ and as the word spreads more are likely to come and share the hospitality and the company. Posters are situated around the local community. The next Thursday coffee morning is coming up in July.

Fish Friday for Alex’ House New Club

The first Alexandra House monthly luncheon club meeting took place on a Fish Friday in June, when members of the local community were invited to visit, ‘take lunch’ and participate in a game of bingo or a quiz. Fabulous fish was cooked by Marie, Alex House receptionist, who swapped her catering career for a caring career!

Kitchen assistant Haley has volunteered to come and play the piano on another occasion – such multi-skilled staff are a great asset to the team and contribute hugely to the enjoyment of such events.

A great social time was had by all participants.

Next Lunch Club meet is on 21st July – What will be on the Wednesday Menu?
