New resident, Benji the dog, has brought an avalanche of love and joy to the home as he shares his friendship unconditionally with each and every resident at Melbourne House Care Home.
The mixed breed pooch has already made a lot of friends with his sociable and cheeky antics as he patrols the home, looking for whom to engage next in a hug and stroke.
Care Home Manager at Melbourne House Care Home, Alicja Szefler says: “Benji is causing quite a stir with his loveable nature. It’s so nice to see our residents enjoy his company and express their love through a hug with this cute little chap.
“There is a serious side to Benji’s presence though. For well over a year we have all been very sheltered from physical contact. It’s been necessary to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus, but the downside has been our residents haven’t been able to receive the comfort they would have from visits from loved ones.
“I think we all underestimate that very basic need of human contact, and especially the comfort of a hug. Benji is a little soldier and has taken it upon himself to make sure everyone living at Melbourne House benefits from his attention.”
Now very much part of the family Benji can often be found engaging residents in the lounge, or asleep on an accommodating knee!
